Dyeing Easter eggs? Naturally!

Easter is just around the corner. Even if this year everything is a little different than usual, many are already looking forward to the traditional egg dyeing. Here, children and parents come together and can give free rein to their creativity in dyeing and decorating. But why always buy the finished Easter egg dye from the supermarket, if there is another way?

We have a creative solution for the holidays: Natural egg dyeing with food and plants. This is exactly what we have always wanted to try. And since unusual times can also be an occasion to get to know “new things”, we want to introduce you to the most popular sustainable alternatives and encourage you to experiment.

Natural Easter egg dyeing - HALFAR®

The colours of nature

On the right we have prepared an overview of the most common “natural colorants”. Below we explain what you have to consider in order to achieve the desired colour shades. Before cooking it is recommended to clean the eggs with vinegar water. This will help them to take on the desired colour better afterwards.

The following descriptions refer to the hot dyeing method. Following the described procedures, the colour solution can be filtered before the eggs are hard boiled in it.

All colour variations can be achieved not only in a hot brew, but also in a cooled one that has drawn enough before. So even the little ones do not burn their fingers. For this purpose, the eggs are precooked as usual before dyeing them, and then left in the dye until the desired colour is achieved.

Golden yellow with turmeric

Anyone who has ever used (fresh) turmeric knows how difficult it is to remove the coloured stains everywhere afterwards. This is exactly the reason why it is ideal for dyeing Easter eggs golden yellow. To do this, cut fresh, peeled turmeric into pieces and boil it for about 1-2 hours in plenty of hot water. If you can’t find fresh turmeric, you can also try the powder, which also colours well.

Red to brown with onion skins and coffee

Probably the best known dyeing technique is the use of onion skins. These were used long before the use of artificially produced egg dye. To do this, let about 2 handfuls of onion skins soak in 1-2 litres of boiling water for a few minutes. Coffee can also be used for brown tones. Take about 50 g of ground coffee and boil it for max. 30 minutes.

Intense red with beetroot

Beetroot has a similar colouring effect on all kinds of rootstocks as turmeric. Barely touched, the red colour does not get off your fingers as quickly. Ideal for dyeing eggs! Here too, the red root is precooked in just under 1 litre of water for about 15 minutes.

Green tones with parsley, spinach and nettle

Theoretically, all green, non-toxic plants can produce a wide variety of shades of green. However, not every plant achieves the same colour intensity. Parsley, spinach and stinging nettle are particularly popular for egg dyeing. To do this, cook a bunch of the desired plant in 1 litre of hot water for about 30 minutes.

Blue tones with red cabbage and blueberries

Since there are many different shades of blue, there are also several ways to achieve a blue tone. Popular ingredients are red cabbage and blueberries, e.g. from the freezer. Take about 1 cup of each and boil them in 1-2 litres of water for up to an hour, depending on the desired shade.

Of course you can also experiment with other foods and (non-toxic!) plants yourself and possibly get new shades. There are no limits to your creativity!

Decorate naturally beautiful? No problem!

You don’t have any stickers or glitter pens in the house to put the finishing touches to your Easter eggs? No problem – there are also numerous sustainable ideas.

How about discreet leaf motifs, for example? You can get these if, for example, parsley is placed on the eggs. Then the eggs can be safely positioned in a nylon stocking or a thin net and boiled or dyed as described above.

Another possibility is the rice method. For this you can put the egg for example in an old washed-out yoghurt cup, add a few grains of rice and a little of the colour you made yourself. Close the lid, shake well – and you have a nice speckled pattern.

In addition to these two suggestions, there are many more ideas on how to decorate your Easter eggs.

HAPTICA® live with the Promotional Gift Award 2019

The time had come again, and the HAPTICA® live opened its doors on 19th and 20th March 2019. The motto of this year’s event was “Look & Feel” and accordingly, there was plenty to see and touch. 198 exhibitors at the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB) presented innovations, bestsellers and highlights from their programs, impressing the 1,840 visitors to the event. A large number of visitors from marketing, purchasing, agencies and the promotional products trade were fascinated by the possibilities and a further in the quality of haptic advertising material.

This was also helped by the fact that, for the first time, the 44 winners of the Promotional Gift Award 2019, the Oscar amongst advertising prizes, were not presented in showcases but in an open presentation form.

This form of presentation enabled visitors not only to look at the winning products, but to try them out and to grasp them in the truest sense of the word. In this way, they were able to get a full idea of what had encouraged the jury to choose the product and the extraordinary things about haptic advertising.

The DIAMOND backpack by HALFAR® was also able to capture both the jury and the audience this year.

Sustainably produced?

With all the advantages, the question remains: How was the product made? The DIAMOND backpacks, just like all other HALFAR® bags, are all manufactured in compliance with the ILO core labour standard. This ensures that production is assured from a social point of view. The agreement includes the exclusion of child labour and forced labour for example, and gives workers the right to undertake collective bargaining; a guarantee of adequate wages. The fact that the agreements are not only valid on paper, but also complied with, i.e. that the working conditions and quality of the product are right, is guaranteed by HALFAR® via local employees, audits and regular inspections.

The constituent parts also impress. The material of the DIAMOND is durable, marketable and safe to use and does not require the use of PVC and the associated plasticizers. The constituent parts of the materials used are tested by independent institutes; something we guarantee through our “tested materials” label.

PSI 2019 – Review and preview for the new year

The PSI is over – it’s a good opportunity to look at what the new year has in store for our HALFAR® bag fans, and to look at the impressions made at the trade fair.

This is what it sounds like in numbers:

17,602 distributors of promotional materials, agencies and industry customers were at the exhibition halls in Düsseldorf for three days, checking out the new products on the promotional materials market at this year’s PSI. Over 1,000 exhibitors presented their innovations and top items. More than half of the exhibitors came from abroad. A total of 38 nations were represented.

One of the highlights again this year: the hourly fashion shows. The models also presented HALFAR® bags, fashion from James & Nicholson® and caps from MyrtleBeach®. The strong assortment was impressive, displaying its full effect through the interplay of articles, while offering customers a range of possibilities for the presentation of their brands.

Visitors  could also take a close look and get a feel for what profession and passion for “in product” promotional materials looks like at the CHOICE sisters Daiber, FARE®, mbw®, SND and HALFAR® stands (Karlowsky® was not represented at the trade fair this year). “Connecting passion” was the motto that brought together what belongs together, once again with the opportunity to “come together” this year in the CHOICE lounge.

Visitors at the PSI get a tasty snack in the comfortable atmosphere of the CHOICE lounge while talking about new products with their customer advisors.

Innovation, function, trend and product series: these were the four major HALFAR® themes this year at the PSI 2019 in Düsseldorf.

There was quite a lot to admire: In addition to the 12 new products that were released in Summer 2018, 28 new bags were also introduced. There is definitely something for everyone!

In addition, a HUGE highlight skilfully complemented the trade fair impression.

HALFAR®‘s HUGE surprise at the PSI 2019: visitors were fascinated by the oversized STEP backpack with Polaroids from our “HALFAR® around the world” category.

New products and bestsellers

PSI visitors admired HALFAR® promotional bags on 13 shelves, which gave them a great overview. In addition to the 40 new models, there were also numerous bestsellers on display, including bags from the Business, Outdoors and Sustainable categories. Each one is embellished individually with a logo.

This way the trade visitors once again were assured that HALFAR® promotional bags not only look great with functional design, they are also perfectly geared towards customer needs.

The possibilities and services revolving around promotional labelling were also examined closely on site on the living object and discussed with colleagues.

Innovations

“Innovations are in our blood” and “good solutions, too”. The reactions to our new items proved that these aren’t just empty phrases. With its qualities, the DIAMOND backpack was the first to impress the jury of the Promotional Gift Awards, thereby causing a stir amongst customers. A real eye-catcher with its distinct diamond design, this custom-made answer to the needs of promotional material distributors has a young and modern appearance.

The DIAMOND backpack is a real winner. Not only did it impress the jury of the Promotional Gift Award 2019, but the trade fair visitors as well.

The HASHTAG notebook backpack also made eyes sparkle with the “I want that too effect”. Technologically-adept customers in particular were thrilled by the many functions and innovative appearance. Equipped with lots of (hidden) pockets for laptop and tablet, it also provides enough space for all the other items. A special highlight: a built-in cable that can be used to connect a powerbank to a mobile phone. A colour matching zipper is the finishing touch that skilfully complements this innovation!

All about the newly discovered wanderlust and love of the outdoors

“Kids, the weather is so great, go outside!” Those, like me, who grew up listening to this sentence, often have a double-edged relationship with a blue sky. Naturally, as a child I would sometimes also have rather spent more time indoors or in front of the television than was good for me. When I had to go outdoors, however, I really could take pleasure in being outside.

No one is left out with the outdoors

The word outdoors had not been invented when I used to meet with friends outside; rolling down North German dikes, stomping in rubber boots in fish ponds, collecting conkers, and it did not exist when I went camping, cycling and made fires as teenager. And yet always noticed again and again: Outdoors is more than just the fresh air my mother wanted me to experience. Outdoors is, in the best sense of the word, is the feeling of being “untroubled”, being free.

Today outdoors is a megatrend and a lifestyle. Here are just a few examples for what people like to do outside today:

  • Eating outdoors is in. Ever larger barbeques and completely furnished garden kitchens prove this impressively.
  • Drinking outdoors is in. Beer gardens blossom even in the north of the republic and quite often innkeepers extend the season into the winter with blankets and heaters.
  • Working outdoors is in. Urban gardening is the trend, such as growing vegetables – even in the city. On balconies, in front gardens or in rediscovered allotment gardens people are raking, sowing and harvesting to their heart’s content. And office workers too stick their laptops under their arm and work in the park.
  • Holidaying outdoors is in. Increasingly luxurious camping sites are shooting up with more and more gigantic motor homes arriving by the minute. They turn ordinary camping into glamorous “glamping”.
  • And naturally, being active outdoors is in. In the past, strolling, cycling and hiking tours weren’t something, which you could boast about to your friends. But today, you can.

Above all: Hiking! Since Hape Kerkeling’s book “I’m off then” at the latest, a real stampede has headed towards pilgrim and hiking routes. Today, even hipsters from the city lace up their hiking boots at the weekend and setting off. Sauerland, Harz and Teutoburger Forest are no longer synonymous with a bourgeois way of life but are hot new destinations for weekend trips.

Has anyone spotted it already, the new Erlkönig prototype by HALFAR®? Wandering through Bielefeld with its typical Erlkönig prototype pattern, it is being tested to the core in everyday situations. Now it has apparently been seen by some attentive fans.

In addition to the design, prototype construction and laboratory tests on our bags, we also test ourselves. So that no-one can recognise the specific bag design prior to publication, we create these innovations as so-called Erlkönig bags. And we test these bags to the maximum: through everyday use. This means: only the approximate shape of the bag is recognisable. Neither the complete functionality nor the materials or colours can be seen. The idea originates from the automotive industry, where this conspicuous and simultaneously “Erlkönig” camouflage look is frequently used so as not to reveal too much information during test drives with new cars.

But we will say this much: the innovations for 2019 will also knock your socks off!

So what happened? One lovely day, a mail was sent to us from Daiber, our affiliated company. Could we possibly support them with their outdoor-theme photoshooting? “You’ve got quite a few nice backpacks there…”

“Yes, we most certainly have!” – and they impressed our model Ben so much that today you can marvel at this small but sophisticated outcut film, created as a hommage and a thank you to his new HALFAR® backpack.

Enjoying the freedom of being outdoors, heading right up to the mountain peaks, coming directly in contact with the natural world. Soft, golden light; wild mountain streams, weasels and marmots – thus far the theoretical impression of an outdoor adventure hike to a mounting lodge. And the photoshooting team were able to reflect all of this in their images.

In view of the tasks ahead, the stylists asked themselves:

“What are all the things that have to go into a day trip backpack?”

“Well, really a sleeping bag for the mountain lodge, plasters, washing items, a cap, a water bottle…ah, this is where you can fit in a drinking system. Wow, there’s still some space left!” “And if it rains, he can also protect himself from the rain.”

“Where?”
“Look, in the bottom section of the bag.”
“Ah!”
“But of course, it shouldn’t rain!”
“No, but you still have to fit a drinking bottle in, and the snap hook at the side.”
“What are the loops for?”
“You can fasten your hiking poles there if you have to keep your hands free.”
“Aha!”

Once everything has been prepared and the models attired and styled, the process begins. The dew is still on the meadow whilst the models struggle up the first hills. An amazing view over the valley opens up in front of the entire crew. Meadows and green foliage; further away the mountains are white with snow. The morning mist steams. A real outdoor-feeling atmosphere is created.

The beginning of a love story

Delighted by the view, part of the group decide to leave the road and go across the fields for a while, They don’t want to cross the mountain stream using the bridge, but rather on foot. “Anyone can take the easy way,“ they think, and scramble down the slope again in the direction of the stream. “That should really make for great photos!“ crows the Marketing Manager.

However, what no-one has thought of on seeing the idyllic stream was the icy cold water.

“Think of the images!” they cry, firing model Ben on

“This isn’t a job for softies,” he grins.

Ben works his way onward over slippery stones with his hiking boots in his hand, pleased that he can unzip the legs of his trousers and that the backpack sits securely and stably on his back. The fact that he can fasten his cap and hiking shoes to the backpack impresses him greatly. The foundation for a love story was thus laid – and the everyday use of the backpack did the rest!

A climb with interesting encounters

Delighted to have got away with dry trousers from his little expedition, our daring model climbs back onto the bank. The venturous plan of tickling fish and grilling them over an open fire is rejected, laughing, by the group. “Let’s go back to the others,” they decide, and set off on the ascent in the direction of the mountain lodge.

It soon becomes clear why they had constantly felt watched during their little adventure. A herd of brown and white cows had been observing events at the mountain stream with great curiosity. Above all a little cow with brown ears and a sleepy gaze had enjoyed watching the creative process so much that it made it into our film!

The crowning glory of an eventful day

On reaching the mountain lodge, exhausted yet happy, it was revealed that the stylists had not just thought about the production of good photos, but also about the happiness of their colleagues and models. Instead of the sleeping bag and toothbrush, they conjured up diverse delicacies from the backpacks. The rustic wooden table was filled with delicious food. Soon everyone was sitting chatting and laughing, bringing the eventful day to a jovial end together.
