The PSI 2020 is over and was a complete success. However, this year there were not just new products of the CHOICE sisters to be marvelled at, but the exhibition display also stood out with its new makeover.
Premiere at the PSI: the CHOICE Experience
At the PSI 2020, the sisters of the enterprise group CHOICE (SND, mbw®, Daiber, FARE® and HALFAR®) presented themselves on a new exhibition stand. Under the motto CHOICE Experience, it not only visualised the mutual understanding of brands, but also made it into an experience for the 16,367 visitors, who had travelled from 81 nations to this leading trade fair.
Connection meets independence
The new stand’s design is clear and straightforward. The colour white dominates outside. And so, the generously sized stand – around 650 square metres – gives five independent companies the opportunity to appear under one coherent framework. The signal: the CHOICE family operates under one roof -– and that not only symbolically, but also in wholly practical terms.
Each partner has their own space, shaping it individually with products and messages. However, links to the others are provided everywhere. Passages and views open up the stand. Each company’s area has a wide entry, inviting and welcoming the visitor to the trade exhibition. Themed islands and presenters are structured in one coherent, product-specific and stylistic language. They create display formats with light and graphics, which communicate the product variety and brand values to the customer.
Experiencing inner values – the CHOICE Lounge
As the customer enters the stand via the individual business worlds, he comes upon the inner core of the CHOICE group. Here, all positions of the otherwise diverse advertising media experts meet as one big community of values. The lounge in the middle of the stand is, therefore, purposely designed in a different way to the outside product areas. It is kept in warm colours and creates an ambience of well-being for breaks and discussions. Sustainability, quality, innovation, service, and partnership – these are some of the CHOICE values, which became apparent this year; also in the statements of the respective entrepreneurial key players and in product and image photographs.
Sustainable, useful, new for 2020 at HALFAR®
Sustainability is not a megatrend for us here at HALFAR®, but a subject that emerges from our fundamental position. Today, we work at the company headquarters Bielefeld in a CO2-neutral way and, in new engagements and initiatives, we demonstrate again and again that we are serious about future and customer-orientation. This is shown in practice as far as the bag innovations 2020 are concerned. With materials such as recycled PET (rPET) and pioneering concepts, we offer solutions for a consistently growing number of customers, who also hold this subject close to their hearts. The new bags of the HALFAR® stock range can be summarised into three categories as follows:
Re-growing and renewable materials
With the new COUNTRY and LOOM series, here at HALFAR®, we place emphasis on the re-growing raw material cotton and/or a cotton mix and show how versatile and fresh this material is when used. With a plus in sustainability thanks to organic cotton, our new re-usable bag – ORGANIC – scores; ideal for buying fruit and vegetables without using plastics. And, with the new PLANET series – made of “pre-recycled cotton” – we go one step further, as this cotton is derived from the cut-off remnants of bag production. For the CIRCLE range as well as for the drawstring bag CARE made of rPET, we also use a material that prevents waste and utilises existing resources: recycled PET bottles.
Durable, multifunctional and quick – thanks to new finishing processes
What lasts longer is used for longer. Also combining useful functions, it becomes a faithful and a sustainable companion in everyday life. The eight bags from the big new business range – FRAME – impress with their finish and high usage value. Apart from their durability, they are also fast, thanks to the award-winning finishing process – turbo finish HALFAR FAST LANE®. Equally new and particularly functional: the roller bag – HASHTAG as well as the notebook backpacks – EXPERT, TOP, LOFT and COMMUNITY.
Small and efficient bags
Minimalism and concentrating on what is essential contribute to the conservation of resources and therefore add to greater sustainability. With the TREND series, our HALFAR® range offers simple, reduced bags, which emphasise popular colours such as off-white, mint-green or antique pink. With the mono-strap backpacks – IMPULSE and HASHTAG – as well as the BodyBag – COMMUNITY – made of PV imitation leather, three small, smart bags for all pocket essentials are entering the market. As an addition, the uncomplicated FLOW series offers a CrossBag and a Thermo bag. Also, the two new bags from the tried and tested felt series – MODERNCLASSIC – certainly are a sign of the times: the felt cover for laptops and the organiser for the office relocation make New Work comfortable.
In all, we are pleased to present to you 40 new bags in six brand new series, as separate bags or as addition to existing bag families. By the way, all are PVC-free and available quickly from stock and around the clock in our online shop. Order your samples for review straight away and convince yourself.
You want to know more? Our colleagues in the sales teams are here to help you and will be happy to advise you. We look forward to continuing together with you on the path towards greater sustainability in 2020.
What actually happens to a truck tarpaulin which one has no further use for? At HALFAR®, we utilize it to create new bags. The German ZDF television crew that also produces the TV show WISO has filmed the way which an upcycled truck tarpaulin is undergoing. In the end, our sewing workers used the tarpaulin cuttings to make individual WISO backpacks of it. Just click at the picture below to see the full video.
Dear customers, dear colleagues,
The year 2019 is slowly coming to an end. Therefore, we want to thank our colleagues and customers, as well as all partner companies for your trust and engagement!
It was an exciting and, above all, an eventful year. Together, we achieved so much!
To summarise, we want to reflect upon our achievements with you. Starting from our range of bags to the certifications and awards; and then onto the issue of sustainability, which has characterised 2019, and the outstanding things that occurred here at our site in Bielefeld during this year: From the insect-friendly roof garden to the new logistics centre.
Products & awards
In this year, exciting new products found their way once again to our selection range. And so 40 innovative products came on board. There was everything from backpack to shopper. We are especially proud of our DIAMOND backpack, with which we were able to impress the jury of the Promotional Gift Awards event. Many thanks for the award!
Also worth mentioning is the new FRAME series and the new Finishing Technology HALFAR FAST LANE® associated with it, which can offer answers to many questions. Overall, our customers could choose from a total of 213 products and 14 finishing technologies in 2019.
Moreover, we were delighted to receive three prizes at the PSI Sustainability Awards. In the “Social Excellence” category, we were able to impress as a particularly staff-friendly and cooperative company and were able to bring the first prize home. We achieved second and third place respectively in the categories “Social Initiative” and “Economic Excellence”. For that, once again many thanks!
The HALFAR® Online shop
In May this year, our new HALFAR® homepage went live, including a modern and intuitive shop. A clear design and an optimised user interface quickly resulted in remarkable acceptance. The combination of interesting facts and a round-the-clock option to obtain samples and goods from stock is increasingly being taken up and enriches our collaboration.
Employees, trainees & young talent
The HALFAR® team experienced strong growth once more in 2019. The team now consists of over 130 colleagues, who strive on a daily basis to make the HALFAR® brand a guarantor of trustworthy products and sustainable management. Thanks to everyone for the team feeling.
In 2019 we can also look back on the 9 young people who started their training in our company. Apart from the six vocational training placements offered previously offered, we also filled an apprenticeship for an e-commerce administrator for the first time. We were also able to congratulate four trainees on their success in passing their vocational exam. The HALFAR® team continues to support three of them. We are so happy that you are with us!
Sustainability in 2019
No subject occupied us this year as much as the search for additional opportunities to work even more sustainably and to make our products even more sustainable.
As planned, we fully compensated our unavoidable transport emissions this year. Together with Insect Respect, we expanded our green space on our company roof by a further 450 m² and designed the roof with green plants, piles of deadwood and other nesting places, thus creating additional, essential habitats for insects.
A further measure for cutting CO2 emissions was the purchase of our first electric company vehicle. It is a good alternative, especially for short trips.
We also support the use of the Job Bike, local public transport as well as the creation of car sharing initiatives. Colleagues “biked” over 5,000 km at this year’s City Bike Event. This employee initiative cut 732 kg of CO2. All these measures can be looked up in the current sustainability report, which was extended in 2019, incorporating the SDGs; the UN’s “Sustainable Development Goals”.
As well as the existing DIN ISO 14001:2015 and DIN ISO 9001:2015 certifications, we were also able to attain GOTS re-certification this year. This means that all products, which carry this seal, continue to fulfil the highest ecological and social requirements along the whole of the production chain.
Modern working space and a new external warehouse
We also experienced strong growth in terms of space this year. The new logistics centre in Bielefeld Altenhagen went into operation in August after only 10 months of construction. It is merely a few kilometres from our headquarters and serves to centralise our shipping processes. Our bags are stored here in a 7,100 m² space. Moreover, a photovoltaic system is installed on the roof, which produces the electricity for our electrically operated forklift trucks, amongst other.
Our fourth construction phase was also occupied, now functioning as a modern office space and work area under the motto “NEW WORK”. At the same time, fruit baskets and water dispensers were introduced to provide healthy sustenance for all employees.
Other 2019 highlights
We supported the Glückstour (Good Luck Tour) for the seventh time this year with our bags, when chimney sweeps cycle through Germany on their bikes, collecting money donations for children with cancer. We made donations, too. School children in Tanzania could enjoy their new bags and backpacks.
After the first Bagground day last year with so much positive feedback, the second one was held this year. On this day, future trainees as well as their families and friends had the opportunity to become even more familiar with our company before the start of their training. Armin Halfar personally took them on a tour through the company.
Thank you for 2019!
At this point we want to thank EVERYONE most sincerely – once again – who made 2019 into what it was. We are already looking forward to a strong year 2020 and wish you all a very Happy Christmas!
Best regards from Bielefeld,
Kathrin Stühmeyer-Halfar & Armin Halfar
At last! Our current sustainability report is here. And the subject of sustainability is more topical than ever. Never before have so many people gone onto the streets for a rethink of climate policies. However, we also find that the term “sustainability” is being used almost in an inflationary way. More and more products are coming onto the market advertised as sustainable. Finding out what is really sustainable is not so easy at times.
This is exactly where our sustainability report starts. We explain and clarify what sustainability means for us at HALFAR®. For this, we create transparency around our processes and give insights into our world of work. The report shows what exactly makes our products sustainable products and how we position ourselves as a company, what drives us and what we strive for.
Reporting on sustainability enters the next round
We first comprised a list of our implemented projects in 2017. The first real sustainability report followed in 2018. This contained a developed reporting structure reflecting the three sustainability dimensions for the first time. What fitted onto just over 30 pages at the time, has now grown to over 60 pages. An indication of the impact achieved through our joint work.
In order to further structure this year’s report, to make it clearer, and more practical, we have integrated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) in this year’s report. An SDG matrix, created in collaboration with B.A.U.M. Consult, presents all measures in a compact and clear way.
The following flipbook shows you our SDG matrix. In reading mode you can also download the matrix. Just click on the respective button.
So what is HALFAR® doing now, in order to be able to call itself sustainable?
The answer is: A lot! It starts where ideas are created – at our company location, and projects with other committed people, all the way through to our products and decoration processes.
Moreover, our new workstations with height adjustable desks and our new “New Work Area“, which is distinguished by its open-plan interior design, are on the right path within the context of sustainable and healthy working. And don’t forget our new logistics centre, which provides many benefits for our customers, the environment and logistics processes in equal measure.
HALFAR® says thank you!
At this point, we want to thank everyone who wrote this report with us, who implemented the many measures and projects or supported us with this. The results, the positive feedback and the dynamics around the subject of sustainability show us that we are on the right path in our work. Furthermore, we are motivated to work ever more efficiently and sustainably and to show what else is possible!

It is yet another exciting HALFAR® decoration to add to our collection of innovations. But what exactly does the new decoration method involve and what makes it so special? We have concluded this in the following article.

The idea for innovation
How can we decorate a bag quickly and, most importantly, in high quality? It is a question that we at HALFAR® have been working on for a long time. Now we have the answer: HALFAR FAST LANE®.
The formula one of decoration
What are the advantages of the HALFAR FAST LANE® method compared to other forms of decoration? The answer is simple – there are lots.
Probably the most compelling argument in favour of the new process is the lead time. It is now possible to complete an order in a single day, depending on the quantity and clarity of the order. No-one else is faster! Another benefit is the brilliant print result. If the logo needs to stand out, a spot coating can be applied to give it a high-quality look and make the motif appear three-dimensional. And if that is not already enough advantages for you, here are a few more:
- already from one piece, ready from one day after the launch of the order
- good value
- especially intense colours
- free from solvents and heavy metals
- no colour bleeding
- energy-saving printing process
- noble with spot varnish finish
- 4-colour text up to font 6 pt (for vectorised fonts)
The bags in the new FRAME collection also do their bit for the promotional effect. They really do create the perfect frame for your message. Their special decorative seams frame the logo and attract even more attention to the promotional space. It is unique!
Have you tried the new HALFAR FAST LANE® method yet? Our customer advisors will be happy to help!
As part of our sustainability policy, we have gladly decided to support the “Bielefeld Community Foundation”. We have promised a “Bronze” sponsorship for three years.
Citizens and companies of the city for citizens: The intention of the sponsor model of the community foundation is to be able to regularly and reliably count on earmarked donations for the diverse, regional projects over a longer period. In so doing, as many participants as possible, each with moderate amounts, can achieve a great deal and enable the community foundation to undertake long-term projects.
The “Bielefeld Community Foundation” from Bielefeld
Why exactly this foundation? It supports a wide range of social projects, such as swimming lessons for children, youth or elderly people. The foundation also supports regional art and cultural projects. Above all, however, it is local and works for our fellow citizens. In addition, our Managing Director Kathrin Stühmeyer-Halfar is an honorary member of the foundation’s Board of Directors and is therefore familiar with the foundation’s projects.
As a company that is very connected to Bielefeld, we are happy to support regional projects. Therefore, we are happy that our donations benefit worthwhile projects.
It was that time again, on 6th September. Companies with the best sustainable practices were rewarded with the PSI Sustainability Awards in various categories. The PSI Sustainability award honours companies not only for their sustainable products but also for their entire CSR activities and sustainable projects. Having been able to claim the title of winner of the category “Social Excellence” last year, we hoped that we would once again make an impression with our measures and projects this year. Projects such as the planting of our company roof to compensate for unavoidable CO2 and to create habitats for insects or even switching over to electric vehicles for business trips speak for themselves. Furthermore our green board was launched and our “New Work“ space was inaugurated. For these reasons, we competed in various social and ecological categories this year.
The perfect place for an award ceremony
Of course, the right location could not be forgotten either. As in the previous year, the award ceremony took place in the Wiesbaden Kurhaus (assembly rooms). The building is one of the most magnificent buildings in the whole of Germany and gave the evening just the right flair. Moreover, before the award ceremony, experts from the advertising industry were able to share information on current sustainability issues at the annually held PSI Summit.
Awards were given in the following categories:
- Category 1: Economic Excellence
- Category 2: Environmental Excellence
- Category 3: Social Excellence
- Category 4: Environment Initiative
- Category 5: Social Initiative
- Category 6: Sustainable Product
- Category 7: Sustainable Campaign
- Category 8: Sustainable Company of the Year
And the Winner is…HALFAR®!
The nominations in five of six categories were something to be proud of alone. But the excitement was rising now: “Will we be winners once again?”
Yes, we are! HALFAR® wins the PSI Sustainability Award in the category Social Excellence. We ranked second and third in the categories Social Initiative und Economic Excellence respectively. A great result!
We also warmly congratulate all other winners of the PSI Sustainability Awards. We are proud to contribute with you to responsible work in the advertising industry.
At HALFAR®, we are very happy that we were able to convince the jury once again this year and are already looking forward to next time when they say, “And the winner is…“
Climate change is becoming an increasingly important topic in our daily lives. When it comes to meeting climate targets, each individual is called on to an equal extent. Therefore, it is particularly important for us to ensure that our actions are sustainable. We do this with a variety of projects. Here, for example, our work is already performed with a CO2-neutral balance, and we generate our own “green” electricity with photovoltaic systems on our buildings’ roofs. Yet, what else can we do to act more sustainably?
The answer is simple!
Our employees have had access to the electrically-powered BMW i3 for business trips since 28th March 2019.
The BMW i3 has a 170 hp engine, which is powered by a 94 amp-hour battery. It has a range of about 200 kilometres. This makes the nippy little car perfect for shorter trips to our customers.
Electric cars don’t have any transmission, which means they have no conventional gears. Thus, driving them is pleasant and easy as child’s play. Simply charge the battery, and you’re ready to go. And the icing on top: the BMW is hardly audible.
We can easily charge the e-car using our own green electricity. At a mileage of 200,000 km, an electric car charged with green electricity emits hardly any CO2. By contrast, an engine running on petrol weighs 32.48 tons. This means we save nearly 100% of CO2 emissions. What is more, the e-car is also really gentle on your wallet. On average, driving 100 km only costs €3.50.
We at Halfar are already very excited about our new colleague, because with it, we are able to act even more sustainably. This promise is also found in our products. If you would like to find out more about our sustainable products, take a look at related articles in our blog!
Everyone knows the problem from their everyday work: After a few hours, concentration starts to flag. When the attention starts to wander and blood sugar begins to dip, it is time for a break. How to make this break useful and how to support our staff in doing so is what drives us.
For many people, the most popular method is coffee – a caffeine hit that Halfar has always provided free of charge. Since drinking large quantities of coffee over a long period is not healthy, however, we have put in place some more ideas to help our staff get through the day. Many of the ideas originated as suggestions on our notice board and from staff involvement measures.
Measure 1 – Sparkling, still or boiling hot – water for all
As we are made of 80% water, the element is essential for our wellbeing, our health and our ability to think. But we still often forget to drink enough during a hectic day – especially when no water is to hand. To counteract this, Halfar has now installed water dispensers at four central locations. Be it chilled, filtered or sparkling water or even boiling water for tea, it is all now available at the touch of a button, helping everyone to stay hydrated.
Measure 2 – Dry inside, green outside – fresh air and exercise
As well as the beautifully designed rooms and inviting canteen, our staff also have the option of using the terraces and green spaces around the building during their breaks or for meetings. Exercise in the fresh air stimulates the brain, provides the necessary distance from problems, or simply does us good, especially if the sun is shining. But our colleagues do not let a stiff breeze or the odd drop of rain put them off getting outdoors either.
Measure 3 – Help yourself – vitamins for all!
Since the end of March, we have been buying fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables from a local organic farm once a week. Filled to bursting, the baskets are then placed in the kitchens and the canteen where everyone can access them. Be it apples, bananas, pepper or other fruit and vegetables, they all have one thing in common: they are packed with vitamins and very popular.
As if that were not enough, the vitamins and minerals they contain are a real boost for concentration. It is scientifically proven that they influence our cell growth and that particularly vitamin C has a positive effect on our brains and thus our concentration.
It is a totally natural way for us to increase our concentration and thus perform better in everyday life. In turn, this enhances our emotional satisfaction and stimulates our creative potential. This “break business” really does have long-term benefits!
