THE LUFTHANSA BAG FROM HALFAR®

How used leather seats become bags

I can charter a seat on an aeroplane. I can swap it with my neighbour. I can sleep on it, eat on it or fidget in anticipation. But taking a seat with me and carrying it around my shoulder? That's possible too! If the fine leather of the seats has been sewn into a bag. And the aeroplane seatbelt is turned into a bag shoulder strap. This is recycling and upcycling the creative way.

This is exactly what HALFAR® has done, creating a real high-flyer for the Lufthansa WorldShop. On the one hand, each of these bags contains a little of the dream of flying, of wanderlust and longing. On the other hand, the bag offers real business-class qualities: padded, removable laptop compartment, pockets for mobile phones and pens, a loop on the back for a trolley and much more...

Promotional Gift Award 2011 for the Lufthansa bag

The crane also took off on the ground and the Lufthansa bag received the Promotional Gift Award 2011, an award that recognises particularly creative ideas for advertising media. What makes the Lufthansa bag so good, apart from the ingenious recycling principle, is that it fits the Lufthansa brand perfectly. The material and workmanship are of the highest calibre. The design is both modern and stylish. And for the merchandising shop of an aviation company, a bag is of course a more than useful item.

So instead of discarding old seats, the upholstery fabric can be recycled. This gives it a second life and sustainability in the most beautiful sense. It reuses valuable material, avoids waste and conserves natural resources.

When I look around, there are suddenly bags lurking everywhere. The 70s curtains in the canteen? They would make great drawstring bags. The patterned upholstery on the bus? Could make original velvety-soft shoulder bags. And the stewardess's blue uniform with the gold stripes. Pretty chic for a shopper, isn't it? Who knows, maybe we'll see these materials reborn as bags in the airport shops.
